Students will create a mini-composition using only lines, shapes, and a single letter to display their understanding of the design principles of positive/negative space, rhythm and movement.

Notan is a Japanese word meaning dark versus light harmony. Students created their own version of a Notan using paper, glue, and scissors to experiment with positive and negative space.

Personal Avatars
PERIOD 1
Students will visually simplify themselves into an Avatar that fits into the identity of a larger online community while still representing a individual characteristic of themselves
- Stretch Goal #1: Using your avatar's head, create a set of emojis (facial expressions) that you could use on your phone or in your chosen online community.
- Stretch Goal #2: Create a "bitmojii style" sticker of your avatar in a new pose doing something that includes text.
- Stretch Goal #3: Create an alternative clothing outfit for your avatar.

Students were introduced to Adobe Illustrator for the first time. They learned various basic skills and demonstrated their learning by creating a robot illustration.

Movie Poster Designs
PERIOD 1
Students will participate in the creative process to make a fictitious movie poster from conception to final print. Students will research movie poster design, draw up multiple sketches, and practice new Photoshop techniques. The end result of the poster will show their proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and their understanding of Visual Hierarchy and new graphic design concepts.

Assignment Choice #1: Create a convincing movie poster for a completely fictitious movie.
Assignment Choice #2: Create a convincing movie poster based off of an existing movie, but change it into a "pun" or play on words. For example, instead of "Planet of the Apes" it would be "Planet of the Snapes" from Harry Potter. Assignment Choice #3: Create a convincing movie poster for a movie adapted from *classic literature. Come up with new, hip title. |
